About Us
The Bible Way Church of Christ was established in 1957. The conception began in a small house on Wheat Street, where a few saints gathered together to worship the Lord. It was brought to the attention of the late Mother Sylvia Rose under the leadership of the late Bishop Smallwood E. Williams, founding Apostle and Presiding Bishop of the Bible Way Church of Christ WorldWide that a building was needed. Bishop Williams was instrumental in obtaining a building in the heart of the city at 912 Hampton Street in Columbia, SC. In searching for a pastor, Bishop Williams appointed Elder Chester A. Byrd a young man from San Antonio, Texas. On October 12, 1958, Elder Byrd was installed as pastor of the 1st Bible Way Church in Columbia, SC. In 1974, Elder Byrd was consecrated as Bishop and led the church to its present sanctuary at 3111 Piedmont Avenue. After pastoring for 24 years, on January 23, 1983 the Lord call Bishop Chester A. Byrd home. In April of 1983, the Lord blessed the church to receive yet another knowledgeable shepherd in the person of District Elder Arthur J. Morgan.
In July 1992 District Elder Morgan known to many as “Mister Sunday School” was consecrated as Bishop and assigned as Diocesan Bishop of Florida. On October 10, 1997, Bishop Morgan retired as Pastor of the Bible Way Church of Christ, after serving for over 14 years. His legacy shall forver remain a part of this great minisrty.
A few months later in that same year the Lord blessed us with another dynamic leader, Elder Roy L. Belton. Elder Belton, much like his predecessors, worked diligently in Bible Way Churches World Wide. In 2005 Elder Belton was consecrated to the office of Bishop. During his time here Bishop Belton implemented serveral successful ministries at the church. In 2007, due to the illness of the late Bishop Roy L. Belton, Senior Elder Willie Mullins was placed as the Interim Pastor and accepted the torch to move the church forward. Elder Mullins with the help of the Lord, determination, and dedication to the ministry and church, Bible Way continued steadfast in faith the faith.
In June of 2014, after much prayer Bishop James Mack was asked to serve as our pastor. Bishop Mack was very humbled by their consideration and asked for time to seek God and pray with his family. On September 5, 2014 Bishop Mack officially became the pastor of Bible Way Church of Christ on Piedmont Ave.
Today we sit in the heart of the Booker-Washington Heights Community where we address the spiritual needs of people. God has certainly been good to us and we continue to stand confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.
